Our Journey

From a Santa Fe startup to a statewide give-back

StudentSpace was built by people who believed small colleges deserved the same data tools as the big ones. Here's how a for-profit software company became a resource for New Mexico's next generation of edtech builders.

1998

Founded in Santa Fe

StudentSpace opens its doors on the premise that small colleges (1,000 to 5,000 students) deserve high-touch, affordable data tools rather than complex enterprise systems built for massive research universities.

1998–2020s

Supporting institutions nationwide

Full Circle Tracking, SchoolView, and our assessment tools go on to serve colleges and universities across the country — built in partnership with research grounded in work with the U.S. Department of Education.

Ongoing

A give-back that started small

Long before this relaunch, the StudentSpace Foundation was already providing free access to our tools for underfunded schools and low-income families across New Mexico and California.

2026

The full transformation

We're retiring license fees and sales quotas. edplan.ai launches as a free planning portal for New Mexico students, and every product we've built becomes free, open material for New Mexico entrepreneurs to build on.

What we built — now open

A StudentSpace CSR Initiative

A free planning portal for every student in New Mexico

edplan.ai is our answer to a simple question: what if every student in the state — not just the ones at well-resourced schools — had a clear, guided way to plan their path through education and into a career?

Built with, not just for, New Mexico

edplan.ai helps individual students plan their course from middle school through career, with no cost to students, families or schools.

Funded to stay free

edplan.ai is funded through StudentSpace's corporate social responsibility program. There's no subscription, no ad model and no data sale behind it — it exists because the company that built it chose to fund it that way.

What students, families and schools get

For students

A guided view of coursework, milestones and options — built to make the next step visible, whatever grade a student is starting from.

For families

A plain-language way to follow a student's plan and understand what's coming next, without needing to decode a school system alone.

For schools & districts

Planning tools for coursework, milestones and pathways, offered to New Mexico schools at no cost.

Bring edplan.ai to your school

Academic planning and AI

edplan.ai brings StudentSpace's education-planning experience into course and career pathway guidance. AI-assisted recommendations help students explore possibilities; students and advisors review the plan against academic requirements.

Build an education plan

Start with an academic or career goal. Consider coursework, prerequisites, milestones and alternative pathways, then review the next steps with a counselor or advisor.

Understand the technology

The platform's planning workflows and course recommendation logic are part of the technology available to qualified Startup Access entrepreneurs. Technical documentation and onboarding explain the architecture and how to build on it.

Giving Back

What We’re Giving Back to New Mexico

Technology, product ideas and experience built over more than 25 years — ready for New Mexico's next generation of innovators.

StudentSpace began in New Mexico in 1998. Over the years, we developed education technologies, worked with colleges and universities, tested ideas in real institutional environments, and learned what worked — and what didn't.

Now we want that experience to become a starting point for someone else.

We are making selected StudentSpace technologies, product concepts, source code, designs, documentation and business knowledge available at no cost to eligible individuals, students and startups based in New Mexico.

Take an existing idea further. Modernize the technology. Give it a new name. Adapt it for a different market. Or use what we learned as the foundation for something entirely new.

More Than Source Code

Code is only part of what we accumulated over more than two decades.

Depending on the project, selected applicants may receive:

  • Source code and existing technology that can provide a technical starting point.
  • Product concepts and designs developed around real problems faced by students, educators and institutions.
  • Technical architecture and documentation to help understand how the systems were designed.
  • Business and implementation knowledge gained while working with colleges and universities.
  • Time with the StudentSpace team to understand the thinking behind the products, lessons learned, and opportunities we believe still exist.

The objective is not simply to hand someone an old software product.

It is to give New Mexico innovators a head start.

Who Is This For?

This initiative is intended for:

New Mexico students and recent graduates

Why New Mexico?

StudentSpace's story began in New Mexico.

New Mexico institutions, educators and students gave us the environment in which many of our earliest ideas could be developed, tested and improved.

More than 25 years later, we believe some of the value created during that journey should return to the place where it started — not as software sitting unused in a code repository, but as new experiments, new products, new startups and new jobs.

Our quarter century of work can become someone else's head start.

No program fee. No equity. No royalties.

Built in New Mexico. Learned from the world. Ready for New Mexico to build on.

Fees, ownership and licensing

No cost. No equity. No catch. StudentSpace takes zero percent equity in your venture and charges zero licensing or royalty fees.

The underlying principle of the transfer is to empower New Mexico recipients to commercialize, rebrand, adapt, and build viable independent businesses around the software without ongoing royalty fees or equity encumbrance from StudentSpace. The exact formal license agreement will be provided prior to repository transfer.

StudentSpace's CSR initiative · Established in 2007

Nihal Foundation

From our published foundation story: the programs, targets, and achievements below reflect the original account, including its 2015–2016 initiatives.

Nihal Foundation was established in 2007 as the CSR Initiative of StudentSpace Inc., USA. Our CSR focuses on transforming the lives of children & youth, living in urban poverty, through better health and skill development. A global foundation supporting programs in the United States, India, and Puerto Rico Fundamental emphasis on opportunities with the greatest potential to directly and measurably transform the lives of children & youth.

Based in Santa Fe, NM with satellite offices in Gurgaon & Mohali, India, and San Juan, Puerto Rico

To inculcate values and ethics in children with a special focus on male youth to make the world a safer and more prosperous place to live.

Children and adults gathered outdoors for a Nihal Foundation community activity

About the foundation

Nihal Foundation is the CSR wing of Nihal Software, India, and StudentSpace USA working for community development through mentoring, skill development, and counseling with special emphasis on young borderline at-risk males at the grassroots level in the USA, Puerto Rico, Delhi NCR, and Chandigarh.

Since 2007 the role of the Nihal Foundation has been in strengthening and empowering these communities of youth to join the mainstream before it is too late and they get caught, permanently, in the never-ending cycle of:

No skills – No Values - Unemployment – Anger – Alcohol – Drugs – Crime – Jail … and more Anger!

Collage of Nihal Foundation community activities and outreach

Vision

To break the Anger Cycle and bridge the dignity gap by contributing to the creation of developed, Ethical, Educated, and Dignified Communities.

Mission Statement

To inculcate values and ethics in children with special focus on male youth to make a world a safer and prosperous place to live. The moral values, ethical codes and laws that guide our choices in normal times are, if anything, even more important in the current, confusing and disoriented times. These values and ethics will help us navigate to a safer and brighter future! There is a huge skill gap between what is expected of graduates and the job requirements. Private education has failed a whole generation, miserably. The owner of the education business has got rich but the future of their graduates has been jettisoned. Hence our aim is to fill this skill gap and give them direction and purpose to at least 200 poor youth per center per year and make them employable. Whether it is a church or community center in Puerto Rico or USA or a Gurudwara in India – these centers are being used as partners providing a space where technical centers are developed to provide skill development and help in employment in the latest technologies.

Our Focus

The Unemployed Youth with No Skills.
A private education system which creates bogus paper degrees and only raises expectations and students’ fee but not their standards!
One would have imagined that private education would have helped these youth – but no! These institutors have made it worse – awarding fake qualifications of BTECH/MBA with no or very little value. It is like providing a person with a vehicle to success without wheels or a steering wheel – where will these youth go? Now they are only armed with high expectations and no skills. And hence behind this lack of employment is a huge lack of marketable skills, ethics and values. Many of these disenchanted youth have a real degree but with bogus future.
Furthermore, there are many IT/Computer centers in the city but and again over commercialization has left the graduating trainee to be lacking in essential skills.

Nihal foundation has three focus areas and each has a project related to them.

1) Youth Opportunity Center (YOC)
2) Simbarashi Crèche
3) Sunshine Van

Youth Opportunity Center (YOC)

Youth Opportunity Center project image from Nihal Foundation

Nihal Foundation already sponsors skill development classes for the marginalized youth with a focus on the Sikh youth. Since 2012 youth from rural Punjab have been trained and employed via this Bridge Program. Nihal Foundation has found the YOC training centers more effective than simply giving scholarships which are often used to pay towards the rising fees of private education – and the graduating student still lacks skills and does not add value to their life or contribute to society.

The first YOC in India was started in Gurgaon. The Classroom, trainers, and infrastructure in Gurgaon are provided by Nihal Software and StudentSpace USA. Some of these skilled trainees have already been put on live projects from the USA and are being paid a stipend of Rs. 10,000/month. Therefore, to take this successful model to the area which needs it most was proposed by the Delhi Chapter of the Nihal Foundation.

Currently, the YOCs have been set up and running successfully at the Nihal Software Gurgaon office and Patel Nagar Gurudwara, 14/8 West Patel Nagar, New Delhi. Other Gurudwaras in Delhi, Chandigarh, and Punjab are approaching the Nihal Foundation for a partnership. Our aim is to have 11 YOCs running by June 30th, 2016. The main objective is to impact 500 unemployed youth in the first year. In the next three years, it will impact 5000 youth positively by training and assisting them to get employment.

Besides technical skills, emphasis is given to inculcating values and ethics so that the person trained is well-rounded and has developed core values that can take them through life with respect and dignity.

Regular workshops will be conducted on these topics including workshops on corporate culture, financial management and other relevant topics. Experts here and from the US will be conducting these workshops and seminars to encourage these youth to join the workforce with Values in their mind and Skills in their hands!

Sunshine Van

Nihal Foundation started the “Children of Earth” Initiative on Earth Day 22nd April 2015. According to the National Health Survey, and WHO-UNICEF, 8-10 million children are afflicted with severe acute malnutrition in India. Which is half of all the 20 million across the world. We aim to help malnourished children of construction workers by providing the following:

· Chana /Moong Bank: We provide weekly ½ kg of Chana & Moong
· Clothes: Old /New
· Toys: Old/New
· Cakes: Twice a month Polo Café provides Cakes to celebrate their Birthday.

We have a “Sunshine Vans” to collect stuff from donors and deliver them to the children.

Nihal Foundation has started the Sunshine-van initiative that delivers happiness by giving toys, gifts, stationery, clothes, books, and food to poor children at construction sites, slums, and even on roadsides in your city.

We maintain a database of children and Donors. Right now, we are targeting to cover the area between Sohna Road and Golf Course Road and NH 8 and Golf Course extension road. We call it Golden Quadrangle
.Children have our telephone number. They call us and ask for stuff they need. We are like their Flipkart delivering things to them. We are in the process of giving Sunshine ID cards to each kid, which will have our phone number.

Our Achievements so far – right in your neighbourhood

• We are currently working in 3 clusters in Golden Quadrangle:

Cluster 1: Sector 27, Gurgaon: 63 children
Cluster 2: Sector28, Gurgaon: 88 children
Cluster 3: Sector 43, Gurgaon: 26 children

• Created a database of 177 children, we are issuing a “Sunshine ID card” for each child with our phone number at the back so that they or their parents can call us directly for the items needed.

• Tied up with Govt. Hospitals to do their health checkups. Our Sunshine Van turns into a
Mobile Health Checkup Center and with the help of Doctor Asha and ANM workers, We Organized a Health camp in 3 clusters. Children were checked for skin, Eye, Diarrhoea, Anaemia Fever, Cold, and Cough, and given Iron, Calcium, ORS, Cough Syrup
Infants got Vaccinated; Pregnant women also got their dosage of Calcium and Iron.

• Oyo room is keeping our Sunshine boxes in their Office.

Early education partnerships

Northern New Mexico Projects

Our early work with federally funded education programs in Northern New Mexico.

GEAR UP

Middle schools · Española and nearby communities · 2003–04

Following each student's progress

GEAR UP programs needed to see what support each middle-school student was getting. We gave the team a way to record interventions and mentoring for every student, so they could follow the support a student received and how that student progressed over time.

We also worked with the program director on reporting, turning information gathered in the field into the reports and documentation the program required.

Title V

Educational institutions · Northern New Mexico

Student information and reporting

We supported Title V initiatives at educational institutions in Northern New Mexico, combining student information, program support and reporting.

Title III

Institutions · Northern New Mexico

Technology for institutions and students

We worked on Title III initiatives in the region, helping institutions use technology to organize information, support students and report on their programs.

These early projects shaped how we work today.

Understand each student, coordinate the support around them, and turn information into action. That work continues through edplan.ai.

Full Circle Tracking

Connects a campus's student information system, CRM, and LMS into one cohesive advising view, so student success teams see the whole student — not fragments spread across silos.

What the product does

In typical colleges and universities, critical student indicators are trapped in separate databases: grades in the SIS, interactions in a CRM, course engagement in the LMS, and financial holds in the bursar's system. Full Circle Tracking aggregates and normalizes these disparate streams in near real-time, giving retention specialists and advisors an early-warning radar for students at risk of dropping out.

Who on campus uses it

  • ✓Academic Advisors: For holistic pre-session reviews, milestone tracking, and cross-department advising notes.
  • ✓Deans of Retention & Student Success: To identify institutional drop-off trends and manage cohort-based retention campaigns.
  • ✓Registrars & Financial Aid Officers: To track prerequisite verifications, course completion ratios, and satisfactory academic progress (SAP).

What transfers to NM builders

When you apply for Full Circle Tracking through the Give-Back Program, you receive the full commercial asset package:

Source Code Full application source repository, data synchronization daemons, and normalized schema.
Architecture Technical specifications, SIS integration adapters (Banner, Colleague, PeopleSoft), and security docs.

  • ✓Admissions Directors: For funnel conversion analysis, high-school territory performance, and yield forecasting.

Assessment of Student Learning (ASL)

A framework and toolset for measuring competency-based learning outcomes at the course, program, and department level.

What the product does

Accreditation agencies (HLC, SACSCOC, WSCUC, NECHE) mandate that higher education institutions demonstrate rigorous assessment of student learning outcomes. ASL bridges the gap between faculty rubrics and administrative compliance, automating the aggregation of assignment evaluations into department-level competency benchmarks without placing bureaucratic overhead on instructors.

Who on campus uses it

  • ✓Assessment Coordinators & Accreditation Liaisons: To generate audit-ready outcome evidence for regional and programmatic reviews.
  • ✓Department Chairs & Curriculum Committees: To identify curriculum gaps, adjust course sequences, and substantiate academic quality improvements.
  • ✓Instructional Faculty: To apply standardized assessment rubrics directly to course assignments and final capstones.

Mentorship Deep briefing on navigating faculty senate approvals and university assessment committee evaluations.

Give-Back Program FAQ

Answers about eligibility, applications and where to find program information.

Do I need an existing registered business to apply?
